On the proper way to use a timer (in just two steps): [1] Turn the timer along the scale from 0-20-40-55 minutes to the 55 minute position (fully wound to ensure energization. Do not turn counterclockwise!) . [2] Then return to the desired setting time. The timer will then sound a crisp chime. [One customer said that I timed it for 5 minutes and it didn't ring. This is mainly because he turned the timer directly to the 5-minute position, and because the timer was not turned to the 55-minute position, it did not have enough power, so of course it did not sound the alarm. Please remember not to use brute force (even rotating) when unscrewing the timer].
